Just Verbal SAT Prep

SAT Verbal Prep – Classes, Tutorials, Packages, and The Summer Book Group

Students should put some time and effort into verbal prep.  Many students may feel less intimidated by the verbal section of the test, and more able to tackle studying for it on their own, but it is still a good idea to do some guided prep for this portion of the test.

My Summer Book Group is an excellent choice for students wanting to work on verbal prep.   In the summer, I also offer a  Just Verbal Test Prep Package that includes classes and a Proctored Practice Test.

During the school year there are some Classes scheduled that go through the verbal tests in The Official SAT Study Guide.   These can be taken individually, as a series of 4 classes, or as part of the Mostly Math Test Prep Package, which includes two verbal classes.   In addition, individual tutorials are always available.

Students can start working on SAT verbal prep any time after their freshman year in high school.  The Summer Book Group in particular, is a great way for slightly younger students to get an early start on SAT prep.

A description of  The Summer Book Groupclassestutorials and the Test Prep Packages follows.   Pricing is detailed below, and the Verbal Rates Charts at the bottom of this page provides a quick overview of all my rates.

Just Verbal SAT Prep – The Summer Book Group

Reading is one of the very best ways to improve one’s verbal skills, and in the summer I offer a Summer Book Group that runs for 6 weeks.  The class meets for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours with session length depending on the material being discussed and the number of students in the class.

  • The cost is $168 for 6 sessions.  Class size is limited to 8 students.  (Note that this is different from the standard limit of 6 students per class.)

Students read and discuss two books simultaneously — one fiction and one non-fiction.   The non-fiction book may be more challenging than reading material that students have previously encountered.

Students in the Book Group are expected to spend 45 – 90 minutes a day reading the assigned pages, and to make vocabulary lists (and definitions) as they read.  Students will be given discussion questions that they need to come prepared to examine together as a group.

When we meet, we go over the words, the book content, and the discussion questions.  We will critique and consider the merits of the ideas presented in the non-fiction work.

The books read will vary from one year to the next, so this class can be repeated multiple times in order to gain successive layers of learning and analytical sophistication.

My Summer Book Group is a great way to work on improving verbal scores, and encourages students to do some significant reading and thinking during their time off.

The book group will meet at my River and Campbell location in Tucson.  For dates and times for this summer, check the Class Dates page.

Study Tip :  Even without a Book Group, any student can improve his or her verbal skills by spending 30 minutes a day doing uninterrupted reading over and above what is required by school work.

Just Verbal SAT Prep – Classes

Verbal Prep Classes work through the verbal practice tests in The Official SAT Study Guide, taking the time to go through the questions in depth.  We consider points of grammar, reading comprehension, writing style, and vocabulary.

Classes are limited to 6 students per class, so that each student gets individual attention and help .

A summer Verbal Test Prep Package that includes classes and a practice test,  is regularly scheduled.  More information on the package is available below under Verbal SAT Test Prep Packages.

During the school year there are a limited number of verbal prep classes on the schedule.  These can be taken as a series of 4 classes, or as a part of the Mostly Math Test Prep Package, which includes two verbal classes in the bundle.  More verbal classes can be added to the schedule any time 2 or 3 students request them.

Rates

  • $105/class for a single class  that is not part of a series.
  • $85/class for a series of 4 – 7 classes.  ($340 – $595)  You decide how many classes you want to commit to, and you choose the dates to fit your schedule.  A series of classes must be completed within a 10 week period, and must be paid for in advance.
  • Verbal Classes are also available as part of a Test Prep Package that adds in a Proctored Practice Test.  There is a Verbal Test Prep Package which is just verbal material, and a Mostly Math Test Prep Package, which includes two Verbal Classes.   See below for the package descriptions and rates.

Classes with 3-6 students run for 2 hours and 20 minutes.

I will run classes with only 1 or 2 students, but the classes are SHORTER.  A 2-person class runs for 2 hours.  A 1-person class runs for 1 hour and 40 minutes.

For quick reference, here is a rates chart :

Dates

During the school year, classes are offered on Saturdays.  During the summer, classes are during the week.

Choose your class dates from those listed below at the bottom of this page.  The same information can be found on the Class Dates page.

Location

Classes are held at my River and Campbell location.

Study Tip : The SAT study guide that the College Board publishes is the best of the study guides that are available.  Working your way through the practice tests in The Official SAT Study Guide is essential to improving one’s test score.

Just Verbal SAT Prep – Tutorials

I also offer one-on-one tutorials that go through the Reading, and the Writing and Language sections of the practice tests in the College Board’s The Official SAT Study Guide.

In addition to covering the Study Guide practice tests, tutorials can also include working with vocabulary lists in order to increase knowledge of the English language.  The SAT is known for incorporating vocabulary-related questions into their verbal tests.

For verbal prep I would typically recommend doing either classes or tutorials.  However, it does work to combine tutorials with the Summer Book Group and/or an ambitious reading schedule.

Tutorials can be purchased as single tutorials, or as a series of 4 or more tutorials.

Rates

Rates for a 1 hour tutorial are

  • $90  for individual tutorials (no series, no Book Group)
  • $75 for students choosing a series of 4 or more prepaid tutorials (NO Book Group)
  • $60 for students bundling a series of 4 or more prepaid tutorials WITH The Summer Book Group

Rates for a 1 hour and 30 minute tutorial are

  • $120 for students bundling a series of 4 or more prepaid tutorials WITH a series The Summer Book Group

For quick reference, here is a rates chart :

The short, mini-check-in tutorials that are available for math are typically not a good fit for verbal prep.

Dates

Tutoring is available after school during the school year, and more flexibly during the summer months.   Weekend tutoring is typically not available.  Call me or email me to set up a time.

Location

Tutoring is done in person at my River and Campbell location in Tucson.

Study Tip : If you want to work on the verbal practice tests on your own, do as many as possible.  Look ahead and think in terms of months, not weeks.  The College Board provides a lot of material, and it is a time consuming process to go through all it thoroughly.
